7 signs your car battery is about to die

Trust Batteries team · 8 October 2026

Slow starts, dim lights and a swollen case are early warnings. Here is what to look for before your battery leaves you stranded.

Most car batteries in Kampala last between two and four years. Heat, short trips and traffic jams shorten that life, and a battery rarely fails without warning. If you know the signs, you can replace it on your own schedule instead of at the side of the road.

1. The engine cranks slowly

If the starter turns over sluggishly, especially first thing in the morning, the battery is struggling to deliver enough current. This is the most common early warning.

2. Dim headlights and weak electrics

Headlights that dim when idling, a weak horn, or power windows that move slower than usual all point to low voltage.

3. The battery warning light comes on

The dashboard battery light means the charging system has a problem. It may be the battery, the alternator or a loose connection. Get it tested before guessing.

4. A swollen or cracked case

Excess heat can make a battery case bulge. A swollen battery is damaged and should be replaced straight away.

5. White or green powder on the terminals

Corrosion on the terminals blocks the flow of current. Cleaning helps, but heavy corrosion that keeps coming back often means the battery is leaking.

6. A rotten egg smell

A sulphur smell around the battery means it is leaking gas or acid. Do not ignore this one; it can damage other parts under the bonnet.

7. It is more than three years old

Even without symptoms, an older battery can fail suddenly. Check the date stamped on the case.
