Simple habits that add months, sometimes years, to the life of your car battery, plus how to choose the right one when it is time to replace it.
A new car battery is not cheap, so it pays to look after it. Most batteries die early because of how the car is used, not because of a factory fault. These habits help yours reach the end of its warranty and beyond.
Drive long enough to recharge it
Starting the engine uses a lot of power, and short trips do not give the alternator time to put it back. If you mostly drive short distances, take a longer drive of 30 minutes or more at least once a week.
Keep the terminals clean and tight
Loose or corroded terminals stop the battery from charging properly. Check that the clamps are firm and wipe off any white or green powder with a mix of baking soda and water.
Switch everything off before you leave the car
Headlights, interior lights, the radio and phone chargers left on overnight can drain a battery flat. Repeated deep drains shorten its life.
Check the water level on refillable batteries
Refillable (non sealed) batteries lose water, especially in hot weather. Top them up with distilled water, never tap water, so the plates stay covered. Maintenance free batteries do not need this.
Park in the shade when you can
Heat is the biggest enemy of a battery. Parking out of direct sun keeps the temperature under the bonnet down.
Do not leave the car standing for weeks
A parked car still draws a small current. If it will stand for more than two weeks, disconnect the negative terminal or start it and drive it now and then.
Choosing the right replacement
When it is time for a new battery, match it to your car:
- The right size and terminal layout for your battery tray.
- Enough capacity (Ah) and cold cranking amps (CCA) for your engine.
- Maintenance free if you do not want to check water levels.
- A real warranty from a seller who will honour it.
